Should You Have Your Ducts Cleaned?

Should You Have Your Ducts Cleaned?

Simply put—maybe. If you’re simply concerned with dust or particulates contaminating your air, then you may want to hold off getting your ducts cleaned. There are many ways that dust can enter your home, and typically, the dust in your ducts stays there, sticking to the surface metal, and isn’t likely to be circulated through your home. However, there are some situations in which a duct cleaning is necessary, if only to keep your HVAC system running smoothly. But if your ducts do need a good cleaning, Hanna’s expert technicians can come out with one of our truck-mounted vacuum systems for a fast and efficient experience.

Hanna technicians are experts at duct cleaning, but the real question is: do you need to get your ducts cleaned?  While it certainly won’t hurt, cleaning your ducts may not necessarily help, either. The EPA suggests that there is little to no health hazard from duct dust, and that you’re much more at risk from outdoor contaminants, as well as indoor ones like smoking or simply the dust kicked up from moving around, and in order for a noticeable amount of dust to have collected in your ducts, they would have to be years if not decades old.

That’s not to say there aren’t situations that warrant a good cleaning by the experts here at Hanna. If you’re are actually seeing noticeable dust and debris pushed into your living space when your HVAC system engages, then there is likely a build-up of debris and getting your ducts cleaned is most certainly in order.

But dust isn’t the reason to have a cleaning done. If your ducts have become infested with various types of vermin—such as rodents or insects—a good cleaning will certainly clear them out, but they’ll just return if you don’t fix the problem that caused them.

What are signs you need to get your ducts cleaned? One sign you may have issues with your duct work is if you hear your furnace making odd noises. Assuming that there’s no obvious signs that your ducts should be cleaned, how often should you clean them anyway? As needed is a great bottom line, but if you want to have peace of mind, having the experts at Hanna come out to clean your vents typically once per season should ensure that your HVAC system is operating smoothly.
